Hurricane Helene Relief
Hurricane Helene Mutual Aid + Resources in WNC
Admidst the mud, muck, distraction, devastation, and loss left in the wake of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina, the communities from cities to hollers have come together in awe inspiring ways to take care of each other. There is an incredible wealth of resources being shared in the form of supply hubs, neighborhood kitchens, distribution networks, volunteer brigades, and wellness check trekkers. Not only are these resources being shared widely, they are being complied into the most organized and thoughtful lists. Below you will find a list that I have collected of of folks doing work on the ground all over WNC, especially in more rural areas that are not getting as much media coverage but were some of the most badly hit by the hurricane.
*It is important, as individuals seeking to help, that we do our due diligence in researching organizations and groups before we act, gathering up to date information of specific needs before showing up with donations or to volunteer. The more organized we can be, the more effective our efforts to help will actually help.
**Another thing to remember is that certain communities in the WNC area will recover faster and some will take months, and years to recover if not having to be entirely rebuilt from the ground up. If you have money to share now, thats fantastic. But WNC will need money everyday, week, and month for the foreseeable future to sustain the amount of work that needs to be done. I have seen posts about making a note on our calendars to give a little each month to folks in need so that when the media stops talking about WNC, the resources don’t run dry. I think this is a fabulous idea and will be marking my calendar.
I am going to start with a few categories and will be adding to this list as the weeks and months go by as WNC will be needing help for a long time on the road to recovery. We can do this together! Again, there are so many lists circulating out there and mine is certainly not the only or best one! I encourage you to look up, down and all around to find the resources you need or want to support.
